Gmail — best free email service. I have used Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail and many others. Hotmail (Live) has improved a lot but I love Gmail the most: very clean interface and messages grouping making it very easy to keep track of messages.

Notepad++ — a good free source code editor
FileZilla — best free FTP software
GIMP — free image editing program – does most of what Photoshop does
OpenOffice.org — free office suite (like Microsoft Office) with full-function word processor, spreadsheet, database, presentations, and equation editor by Sun Microsystems.
Google Docs — online office suite by Google with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. I use Google Docs most of the time now-a-days since it provides great accessibility convenient.
