Upgrading WordPress 2.6.5 to WordPress 2.7
December 10th, 2008 By admin
The WordPress team announced the availability of WordPress 2.7 today http://wordpress.org/development/2008/12/coltrane/
After checking through the new features, I got super excited and must upgrade to WordPress 2.7 immediately
The features I love are:
- The ability to automatically upgrade WordPress on future releases
- The ability to automatically install and delete plugins directly from the WordPress admin interface
The Upgrade:
Since I did not modify any core WordPress files, I proceeded with backing up the following files/folders:
- wp-config.php
- /wp-content/plugins/
- /wp-content/themes/
- backup the MySQL database (just for safety)
I then uploaded WordPress 2.7 to a different folder public_html/wordpress/. I did this due to WordPress 2.7 was a little big and took sometime to complete the FTP upload.
=> after the upload was completed => I deleted the old WordPress files in public_html => moved the new files in public_html/wordpress/ to public_html/
=> renamed the new wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php
=> changed the database information in wp-config.php
=> uploaded my themes and plugins
=> ran wp-admin/update.php
The upgrade went flawlessly. It took a little while to get used to the new admin interface but the new interface and features are soooooo cooooooooooooool.
If you have not done the upgrade yet => must upgrade, it will be very well worth it!
Notes:
If you uploaded images through WordPress before, you should backup and restore /wp-content/uploads/ too or else your images will be lost. I noticed this because when I read other blogs, I saw the image links result to 404 error.
Update: I just came across this post by Lorelle VanFossen, full of useful WordPress upgrading tips. Check it out if you experience any upgrading problem.
