Dealing With Comment Spam
December 11th, 2008 By admin
During the past a few days, I have had so much fun with spam comments lol
I received an email notification that my blog received a comment, yayyyy! I rushed to the admin interface to check it out. What was that? A long comment with so many links in it linking to adult sites. I have a background in server administration so I knew it must have come from a bad source. Sorry, got to delete you hahaha
As the days progress, they keep shooting me with those comments, more and more each day. I kept enjoying deleting them! Then today, they shot me over 100 comments. Wow, thanks
What should I do?
I recall when I first installed WordPress, there were two plugins installed by default and one of those plugins was about comment monitoring. I never cared to have a close look at those plugins
(sorry to the WordPress team haha)
Now looking at it, the comment monitoring plugin is called Akismet, website: http://akismet.com/. They said they caught so much spam and this plugin is from the same WordPress people so it must be good.
Akismet Activation Instruction:
- Plugins => activate Akismet
- It said it needed the API Key from WordPress.com
- I already got an account from WordPress.com (free) a while ago so I headed there => logged in => viewed my profile and there my key was listed right on the top
- Entered my key and saved => “This key is valid.” Yay !
I look forward to see Akismet killing the spams for me haha. 3 spams came in so far and Akismet caught it all

You can try Comment SPAM Wiper. It has a high rate of detection and has an API that works with the majority of platforms.
